When there is a major holiday, Wall Street is likely to have an off day. In 2026, the stock market will celebrate 10 holidays, as well as two early closings. Most stock market holidays are also federal holidays and bank holidays.
US stock and bond markets will close on New Friday. The market will reopen on Monday, although some international markets will remain closed on Easter Monday.

Standard US stock market hours are 9:30 am to 4 pm Eastern time, Monday through Friday. The two largest American exchanges, the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and the Nasdaq, each maintain these trading hours. Both stock exchanges are closed on weekends.
You can still place buy and sell orders for stocks and exchange-traded funds (ETFs) during trading hours, but there is more risk. Trading volume is light after hours, so prices may change, and your orders may not be fully executed.

For holidays that fall on the same day each year, such as the Fourth of July and Christmas Day, the stock market is closed on the Friday before that if the holiday falls on a Saturday or the Monday after it falls on a Sunday.
One exception: If New Year’s Day falls on a Saturday, the stock exchange is open for regular hours the previous Friday, and the holiday is not observed by Wall Street.
Many US stock markets also close on a National Day of Mourning for the death of a former or sitting president. Traditionally, this day is celebrated on the same day as the funeral.

The bond market index is determined by the Securities Industry and Financial Markets Association (SIFMA). Standard bond market hours are 8am to 5pm Eastern time from Monday through Friday.
In 2026 and 2027, bond markets close on 10 stock market holidays, including Native American Day (formerly known as Columbus Day) in October and Veterans Day in November.
The bond market also closes early at 2pm on the following days:
